Building the Civic Infrastructure for Muslims in the UK.

Building the Civic Infrastructure for Muslims in the UK.

UKMN connects Muslim expertise, leadership and lived experience with the places where decisions are made, so that everyone can live with equal dignity, opportunity and belonging.

And beyond all of this sits a wider picture: rising hate, division and polarisation that threaten the fabric of shared national life. The riots of 2024, persistent anti-Muslim hostility and a fragmented civic landscape make the need for an organised, confident Muslim voice not a luxury but a necessity.

The riots of 2024, persistent anti-Muslim hostility and a fragmented civic landscape make the need for an organised, confident Muslim voice not a luxury but a necessity.

Muslim expertise is everywhere. We make sure it's heard.

There are around four million Muslims in Britain doing extraordinary work. Running businesses, leading public services, working in schools and hospitals, shaping arts and culture, supporting communities in crisis and contributing to every part of national life. That talent and commitment has rarely been organised, connected and channelled into policy, media and civic leadership at scale. UKMN exists to change that.

Over-representation in the prison population. Inequalities in education and employment. Young people feeling shut out of opportunity. The impact of poverty

on families. They are shared challenges that need Muslim expertise and input.

How We Got Here

In 2024, a group of Muslim leaders came together to map the gaps in the civic ecosystem and identify new ways of working. They looked honestly at where Muslim expertise was missing: in health policy, in arts funding decisions, in planning and housing, in sports leadership, in criminal justice reform. The conclusion was clear. Muslim knowledge and experience were present everywhere. What was missing was the infrastructure to organise it and connect it to the places where it could make a difference.

That mapping process led to the launch of the British Muslim Network in February 2025. It showed there was real appetite across the country for a more plural, more professional and more nationally focused way of organising.

Why We Became UKMN

The name reflects a simple truth: we are a network for all Muslims across the United Kingdom, regardless of background, region or nationality. Over the following year, the landscape kept shifting. The government published a national social cohesion agenda. Debates on integration intensified. Expectations of Muslim civic leadership grew. And it became clear that a stronger, more structured organisation was needed to meet the moment.

In early 2026, the network evolved into the UK Muslim Network. The change was also about raising the bar: stronger governance and clearer accountability, a programme of expert-led Impact Labs feeding directly into government, and a commitment to building a national footprint, well beyond London and the familiar networks. UKMN honours everything that came before it and it sets a standard for what comes next, because the moment demands it.
